sculpture of a break dancer on mid century table

Occasionally I get asked if our furniture and lighting can be used for other peoples projects, usually films. For a change this January I was asked by a regular  customer, Izaak Brandt, to collaborate with him on his upcoming solo exhibition of sculpture and performance.

Izaak’s exhibition at “ The Laundrette” on Stokes Croft in Bristol entitled ‘No place like Bris’ was about collective male millennial experience growing up in Bristol and contained a live dance piece and a variety of art works, including sculptures, that he wanted displayed on interesting domestic objects to be sourced from Lowlands.

The process of selection involved Izaak visiting  the shop and choosing a number of items. These, alongside the table he bought from us previously, were used as  plinths for the sculptures. The contrasting materials of  the sculptures and furniture worked really well and when combined with live performance contributed to the overall atmosphere.

The combination of domestic pieces of furniture and striking sculpture made for an interesting and thoughtful juxtaposition.

Music, furniture and sculpture

Music too played a central role in the exhibition and It felt particularly appropriate that a record deck formed a plinth for one exhibit as we have always had a deck playing records in the shop. It is noticeable how different records create a different mood and inspire people in many different ways. I often think that with playlists and radio so prevalent we rarely get to hear albums as they are intended to be heard and playing full LP’s on a deck allows them to be heard as originally intended.

The sculptures looked particularly striking on the selected furniture, and the exhibition as a whole was a great success. It was lovely to see our furniture utilised in such a different way and I would love to be involved in any future similar projects.
